Carmen Seculare

Words by the Rev. H. H. Symonds, M.A., Headmaster

Music by J. E. Wallace, Mus. Doc., F.R.C.O.

First composed for the Centenary Celebration, 1925

Gaudeamus, eia fausto gaudeanmus omine,
  O sodales, Institutum provehamus laudibus.
Fortis aetas conditorum ; nostra par illis erit.
Nostra virtus aequetillos : nos juventus provocat.
  O sodales, Institutum provehamus laudibus.
Stirpe nostra claruerunt omnis exempli viri ;
Hoc bonopraecepta vitae fonte derivabimus.
Una copulabit omnes hospitalis tessera :-
"Semper in commune fidus et sodalium memor
Vitam agam pius probusque, deditus meis agam."
  O sodales, Institutum provehamus laudibus.
Si quis est impar labori seu merendi nescius,
Sive socors, hinc abito : nostra non talis cohors.
Si quis impendit labores, sufficitque munera
Pro virili parte nixus, ille ritu noster est.
  O sodales, Institutum provehamus laudibus.
Certa mens est una noblis erudiri moribus,
Altiusque nomen altum tollere artibus bonis.
Quid, quod omnis strepitus urbis personat subsellia,
Et fragor perstringit aures in foro rixantium ?
Una doctrinae salubris cara nutrix, artium
Excellentium creatrix, nostra nos tenet domus.
Illa ditat, nos beamur : carmen excitabitis,
  O sodales, Institutum provehamus laudibus.
Aula reboet : omnes cante : tecta jam remugiant
  O sodales, Institutum provehamus laudibus.

Lo! The Sound of Youthful Voices

Words by W. G. Cretney.

Sung to the tune Cwm Rhondda.

Lo, the sound of youthful voices
Cleaves the calm and solemn night,
Changing gloom and cold and darkness
Into warmth and cheerful light:
  "Joy and gladness,
  Joy and gladness,
Be with you this Christmas time!
Be with you this Christmas time!"

Down the ages comes the message,
Who can then forbear to sing?
Woods and hills are silent list'ning,
Through the streets the echoes ring:
  "Joyful tidings!
  Joyful tidings!
Peace on earth, goodwill to men,
Peace on earth, goodwill to men."

Earthly cares and human sadness
This sweet harmony dispels,
As the bells ring out at Christmas
All mankind their anthem swells:
  "Bells of gladness,
  Bells of gladness,
Ring your message o'er the world!
Ring your message o'er the world!"
